Old laptops are usually the easiest thing to talk yourself out of selling, since a bad battery or a missing charger feels disqualifying. It usually is not. Tell us what you have, we will meet you in the Albany area or come to you, and look it over honestly.
What we take
We buy laptops including MacBook Air and MacBook Pro by year, Dell XPS, HP laptops and Lenovo ThinkPads. If it is a laptop you or your family used for school, work or browsing and it is now sitting in a drawer or closet, it is worth asking about, whatever the age. A worn keyboard, a scuffed lid or stickers on the case are completely normal and do not change our interest in looking at it. It does not matter whether the laptop is a high-powered model or a basic one bought for browsing and email — both are worth asking about, and so are 2-in-1 or touchscreen convertibles from any of these brands. Bring more than one if your household has a stack of them — old laptops tend to collect in twos and threes once everyone has upgraded.
Condition, in plain language
Two things matter most on laptops: battery health and whether the charger is still around. A battery that no longer holds much charge, or one the operating system flags as needing service, does not rule a laptop out — a battery well past its best days is a normal part of an older laptop's life, not a disqualifier. A cracked screen, a sticking key, a slow hard drive or scratches on the lid are all things to describe honestly rather than worry over. A trackpad that clicks unevenly, keys that feel a little different from a partial keyboard repair, a hinge that has loosened after years of opening and closing, or a fan that spins up loud under any real load are all common wear on an older laptop and worth mentioning rather than worrying over. What matters more is whether the laptop powers on at all and whether it is locked behind a password or an account you cannot get past.
Before you meet us
Sign out of iCloud on a MacBook, or your Microsoft account on a Windows laptop, and remove any firmware or BIOS password if one is set. On a MacBook this also means turning off Find My Mac. Back up anything you want to keep, since we confirm the drive is wiped before you leave. If you do not have the charger anymore, bring the laptop anyway and mention it — a missing charger is common and worth telling us about rather than a reason to hold off reaching out. If you know the laptop still has a corporate management profile or a school-issued lock on it, mention that too, since those locks work differently than a personal account lock, are not always something you can remove yourself, and are worth talking through honestly before the meetup rather than assuming they rule the laptop out.
How the meetup works
Tell us the make, model or year, and condition through the form, or text us a photo. We set a time in the Albany area or come to you, look the laptop over together, including a cold boot to see how it starts up, a look at battery health, and a check of the ports and hinge, and tell you plainly whether it is something we can buy that day. If it is, you are paid in cash on the spot and we confirm the drive is wiped in front of you before you go. If it is not something we can use, we will tell you directly rather than leave you wondering, and the laptop stays with you. Bring the charger if you have it, and any spare cables or a dock that came with it, since a complete setup is easier for us to look at together than a laptop that shows up alone every time.

Questions we get
- Does a bad battery mean my laptop isn't worth bringing?
- No. A laptop that needs a new battery or does not hold much charge on its own is still worth having us look at. Battery wear is normal and does not disqualify a laptop.
- I don't have the charger anymore. Does that matter?
- Bring the laptop anyway and mention it. A missing charger is common and does not stop us from looking at the laptop itself.
- What if my MacBook still has Find My Mac turned on?
- Turn it off and sign out of iCloud before the meetup if you can. A laptop still locked to someone else's account is not something we can do anything with, so it is worth sorting out beforehand.
- Do you buy laptops that won't turn on at all?
- Tell us what happens when you try to power it on. It is still worth mentioning, and we will let you know honestly what we can do once we see it.
